Driver Safety Education Program

Traffic Safety Program  Brochure (pdf -1.6mb)

The Post Falls Police Department has worked diligently over the years to meet the Department’s continuing traffic safety goal of reducing traffic accidents. We believe that our efforts in this area have made our streets safer as is evident by the reduction in traffic collisions over the past few years. Although, noticeable improvement has been made in accident reduction, the area of traffic safety is one of the top complaints we receive from citizens and remains a priority to the Police Department.

In keeping with our traffic safety goals of reducing accidents through education and enforcement, the Police Department has recently developed an education program that is an alternative to the traditional way of handling traffic violations for aggressive driving.

This multi agency program, the first of it’s kind in Idaho, is an innovative driver safety/education course. It will allow drivers, who are stopped for moving traffic violations (risky drivers) and who meet the minimum course qualifications, the opportunity to attend a safety course in place of receiving a uniformed traffic citation. Law enforcement officers instruct the course. The course will cover a variety of safety information and statistics. It will provide the attendees with important information and vivid images of the results of risky driving and the potential impact their actions have on their community with the end goal to strengthen their driving skills.

Currently when a driver is stopped by a law enforcement agency for a traffic violation, they are frequently issued a citation for the offence. Once issued, they have the opportunity to pay the citation or contest the citation in court. Either course of action leaves the driver with no education. This new program, when offered by our officers, will divert minor traffic violations from the court system and require the driver to attend a four-hour safety course in place of a citation. The driver pays for and attend the safety course, which will be held at the Police Department. The funds collected by the driver remain local.

Below are a few of the many benefits to the drivers:

1.      Education: This course provides drivers with a refresher about traffic laws, statistical information about the results of risky driving, as well as, the opportunity to review the traffic safety manual.

2.      No points on driving record:  Currently when a driver is issued a moving violation they receive one to four “points” (depending on the violation type) which are added to their driving record. Insurance companies use these points to determine insurance rates, if 12 or more points are received in any one-year period the operators license may be suspended by the Idaho Transportation Department.

3.      No citation or court interaction: Once the driver has paid for and completed the training session, no citation would be issued and the original violation would not be reported to the court. This will assist in freeing up the workload of the courts and prosecutors.

We are excited to have the ability to offer this type of class to our citizens. If you have further questions about this class please contact the Post Falls Police Department. If you have received a traffic summons for Traffic School please contact us in person or by telephone to sign up.
