Citizens’ Academy Postponed Until 2018

**UPDATE: March 21, 2017 - Organizers announced the cancelation of this year's formerly scheduled Multi-Agency Citizens' Academy with plans to re-open the application process in 2018. More details will be posted as they become available. Thank you!**

The Coeur d’Alene Police Department will be hosting the 2017 Multi-Agency Citizens’ Academy which is sponsored by the Coeur d’Alene, Post Falls, Rathdrum and Spirit Lake Police Departments, along with the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office. The Academy will begin on April 4th and conclude on June 6th. Classes are tentatively scheduled to be held on Tuesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and a couple of Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The purpose of the Citizens’ Academy is to develop positive relationships between law enforcement and the community through education. Academy participants learn how law enforcement agencies operate and gain an understanding of the challenges facing law enforcement in this rapidly growing community. The Citizens’ Academy provides opportunities for open discussions. Participants are encouraged to share comments and ideas regarding problems and solutions. Topics to be covered will include, but not be limited to, the history of law enforcement in Kootenai County, use of force, how your local police and sheriff’s offices operate, tours of the jail and 911 center, and a demonstration day showcasing police equipment, vehicles and special teams.

To apply, complete an application, which may be found on sponsoring agencies websites or Facebook pages, or you can pick one up from the Front Desk of one of the sponsoring agencies. There is no fee. You must be at least 18 years old and have no misdemeanor convictions in the past year. If you have a felony conviction, you will not be selected to attend the Citizens’ Academy. The sponsoring law enforcement agencies seek to fill the Citizens’ Academy session with a cross section of the community. You will be notified if you are selected to participate in the next academy. Class size is limited and it is also recommended that you turn your application into the sponsoring agency which has primary jurisdiction of your residence or business. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact any of the agency members listed on the second page of the brochure.
