Press Release

SUBJECT: Scam

Date: July 28, 2006

FOR MORE INFORMATION CONTACT: Lt. Mclean

The Post Falls Police Department would like to alert the public to an EBay scam that has resurfaced.  Victims have reported that they receive e-mails claiming to be from EBay stating that their EBay account will be suspended due to suspicious transactions unless they answer some questions.  The Suspects ask for the victim’s bank account number, last four numbers of the victim’s social security number and a home phone number if contact is needed.  Shortly after the information is provided money begins to be withdrawn from the victims account using overseas banks.

The Post Falls Police Department is warning that citizens use caution in responding to any e-mails asking for bank account or personal information.  Internet based crimes continue to be on the rise and are very difficult to investigate because the suspects are based overseas.

Victims of these types of crimes are urged to file a report with their local Law Enforcement agency or contact the Attorney General Consumer Protection unit.
